Poker Range Chart: Ranges by Positions

Liam Brooks

This article covers poker ranges for each position at a standard 6-max table. Six seats change how many hands you can profitably open, and the right range chart poker view makes those differences easy to follow. We put together clear poker range charts by position so you can see exactly which hands belong in an open from under the gun through the big blind. A solid poker opening range chart removes most of the preflop guessing and keeps your decisions consistent from one orbit to the next.

How Much Value Does Each Seat Bring?

Position is one of the strongest edges in no-limit hold’em. When you act last after the flop you gain information and can control the size of the pot. That is why later seats open more hands than early ones. The table below shows typical opening frequencies for 100 big blind 6-max cash games.

These numbers form the base of every poker ranges chart by position we use.

Under the Gun (UTG) Poker Range

From under the gun you face five players who can still 3-bet or call. The range stays tight so you keep strong equity and playability.

✅ Raise (about 14% of hands): 22+, ATs+, A5s-A2s, KTs+, QTs+, JTs, T9s, 98s, AJo+, KQo.

❌ Fold: everything else.

🟢 Green cells show the hands you raise.

⚪ Gray cells show the hands you fold.

Hijack (HJ) Poker Range

With one fewer player behind you the range opens up a little. You still need hands that hold up against 3-bets, but you can add more suited connectors and broadway cards.

✅ Raise (about 19% of hands): 22+, A2s+, K9s+, Q9s+, J9s+, T8s+, 98s, 87s, ATo+, KJo+.

❌ Fold: everything else.

🟢 Green cells show the hands you raise.

⚪ Gray cells show the hands you fold.

Cutoff (CO) Poker Range

The cutoff is the first seat where the range becomes noticeably wider. Only the button and the blinds remain, so many suited hands and some offsuit broadways become profitable opens.

✅ Raise (about 26% of hands): 22+, A2s+, K5s+, Q8s+, J8s+, T8s+, 97s+, 87s, 76s, 65s, 54s, A8o+, KTo+, QJo.

❌ Fold: everything else.

🟢 Green cells show the hands you raise.

⚪ Gray cells show the hands you fold.

Button (BTN) Poker Range

The button is the most profitable seat at the table. You act last on every postflop street and only the blinds can still enter the pot. The range expands to nearly half of all hands.

✅ Raise (about 43% of hands): 22+, A2s+, K2s+, Q4s+, J6s+, T6s+, 95s+, 85s+, 75s+, 64s+, 54s, A2o+, K8o+, Q9o+, J9o+, T9o, 98o.

❌ Fold: everything else.

🟢 Green cells show the hands you raise.

⚪ Gray cells show the hands you fold.

Small Blind (SB) Poker Range

From the small blind you are out of position for the rest of the hand, so the range is tighter than the button even though only one player remains. You still open a solid portion of hands, mainly suited combinations and stronger offsuit cards.

✅ Raise (about 33% of hands): 22+, A2s+, K4s+, Q6s+, J7s+, T7s+, 96s+, 86s+, 76s, 65s, 54s, A5o+, K9o+, QTo+, JTo.

❌ Fold: everything else.

🟢 Green cells show the hands you raise.

⚪ Gray cells show the hands you fold.

Big Blind (BB) Poker Range

The big blind does not open first. Instead the chart shows how wide you defend when the button raises. Because you already posted a blind and get a better price, the defending range is the widest of all.

☑️ Defend (about 52% of hands versus a button raise): 22+, A2s+, K2s+, Q2s+, J4s+, T6s+, 95s+, 85s+, 74s+, 64s+, 53s+, A2o+, K5o+, Q8o+, J8o+, T8o+, 97o+, 87o.

❌ Fold: everything else.

🟢 Green cells show the hands you defend.

⚪ Gray cells show the hands you fold.

The Final Words

These poker opening ranges chart examples give you a clear baseline for every seat at a 6-max table. You can treat them as reliable cheatsheets and follow them closely, or you can adjust the edges once you know the players around you. Either way the structure stays the same: tighter early, wider late, and always aware of how many players still have to act.

FAQs

Why do opening ranges get wider in later positions?
Later positions have fewer players left to act and you gain postflop position against more of the table. That combination lets weaker hands become profitable opens.
Should I use the same ranges in full-ring games?
Full-ring tables have more players behind every seat, so ranges stay tighter than the 6-max versions shown here. Early positions especially lose several hands from the bottom of the range.
How often should I open from the button?
A standard 100 big blind button range covers roughly 40 to 45 percent of hands. That includes all pairs, most suited cards, and a solid group of offsuit broadways.
Do these charts change with shorter stacks?
Yes. When effective stacks drop below 40 big blinds the ranges shift toward more all-ins and fewer small-ball opens. Push-fold charts become more useful than the deep-stack opening ranges shown above.
Can I still win if I deviate from these ranges?
Yes. These charts are a solid default, not a rigid rule. Against passive opponents you can open a few more hands, and against aggressive 3-bettors you can tighten the early positions.
